Description
The next documentary in the story of African Americans in France released in Oct 2021. It captures the plight of African American soldiers who fought in WWI, receiving the Croix de Guerre military decoration from France, while still fighting discrimination and hatred at home in America.

An untapped part of our American History – with great footage research – great editing of sound and music – and a story that we knew some of but not like this….sometimes shocking but not surprising….a must see for students of history….another chapter in who we were and are…..

This painstakingly researched and superbly edited and directed film strikingly juxtaposes the U.S. military’s demeaning treatment with the French military’s respectful treatment of Black American soldiers in France during
WW I.
“Fighting for Respect” is perhaps the most ambitious and enduring of Joanne and David’s engaging film series on the African American experience in Paris and France. It shines a broader light on systemic racism, which has no borders. As such it provides an excellent teaching and discussion vehicle.

In this rich and thoughtful documentary, film-maker Joanne Burke presents a lot of important information about a key period in the life of African Americans. It is also a vast period, and she manages to control this information by anchoring the film in major events
But Burke doesn’t limit the story to the war and battles, because she also tells us also why black Americans wanted to fight in the war, and how they were treated during the war by American generals, how they were transformed by their experience in France, and what happened to them, and to the black community, when they returned home, changed men, after the war.
I knew some of this history. But seeing the history in film brought it all to life. This is a documentary all Americans should see, and a history we all should know.
